EFL Championship Playoff Final - Leeds 0 Southampton 1

We've Had Worse Days

The day is here and I spent a bit of time yesterday looking at some of the previews of the ‘neutral’ pundits in the media. Trouble was, I couldn’t find any. That bastion of impartiality the BBC, were carrying an interview with Michael Brown, who, for those who don’t remember, was a very bang average clogger midfield player, who used to play for Leeds… and Portsmouth. With those two things on his CV, it was absolutely no surprise who he thought would win and who he thought was best equipped to deal with the Premier League.  He’s not alone however as everyone has gone for Leeds to win and the reasons are usually because "they’re the bigger club" and nothing to do with football or logic or anything they’ve all seen with their own eyes this season as the two wins we’ve had against them already were largely dismissed.  "Not relevant" says everyone. We will see.

My own preview is here

https://leagueoneminus10.blogspot.com/2024/05/efl-championship-playoff-final-preview.html

It’s always a bit of a worry getting anywhere on public transport these days but especially to a large sporting event. Carnage on the train up there with several smaller stations missed out along the route, which no doubt will have stranded some people intending to make the trip, but we get to Waterloo and across to Wembley Park. All of the designated Saints pubs we walk past are absolutely rammed with massive queues just to get in. Fuck that. Into the ground at 1:30 and a much more civilised atmosphere where you could get a beer in the concourse without having to fight your way past thousands of people.

The Way it Was

As someone who is old enough to remember the original Wembley, nothing will ever beat that walk from Wembley Park Station up Wembley Way, as it was known then, towards the twin towers at the other end. Both old Wembley and new Wembley are amazing once you get within view of the pitch, the actual scale of the thing is still incredibly impressive, even though I’ve been there a few times.

Wembley has no WiFi that I could find and of course, no signal on the phone and so it’s only when the teams are displayed on the screens that I find out that we have the same team as the last game against West Brom.  David Brooks up front with Arma but both Che and Ross Stewart on the bench.  The left-hand side will be patrolled by Wee Man.  I am delighted that Daniel Farke has gone for the same 4-2-3-1 that hasn’t worked against us twice, in those irrelevant wins that we had.  All four of his forwards in place as usual.

Ground filling up and atmosphere building.  From where I am it’s impressive to see the red seats turn into a red and white army off to my left and I was even impressed by the sight of the Leeds fans in white to my right. As kick-off approached, any positive impression the Leeds fans had made on me changed, when it became apparent that three rows behind us was a hospitality box full of Leeds fans.  Fucking tremendous. Hospitality at football – I know it’s a necessary evil, but it will never be anything other than anathema to me.  Over £100 quid for a ticket just to have that lot there.  Needless to say, they were loud, pissed up arseholes, who hadn’t had enough prawn sandwiches to soak up the beer  So, it was going to be an exercise in ignoring them and in particular, ‘Fat Bastard’ who was the loudest of the lot. “You’re only here to see the Leeds” was his on-repeat opinion. Fuck off you dick.  In the words of Kevin Keegan – “I would love it if we beat them… love it”.

Warm-ups, national anthem, let’s go.

It’s a back five when Leeds have the ball but when we get it, both Fraser and KWP are pushed well up. We don’t start too cleverly with Stephens trying an over ambitious ball into midfield and Leeds, roared on by their very loud fans look very energetic.  The big switch to the left looks to be a tactic we will go with, with Wee Man up against Archie Gray. Gray show superb composure the first time we try it before running in the Downes and the ball flying out for a goal-kick.

Leeds have a bit of possession which results in Archie Gray getting away from Downes in the middle of the park, but he gets to the edge of the box and then drags his shot wide. More dangerous looking play by Leeds with Gnonto at the heart of it but he plays a 1-2 with Rutter and then dribbles in a shot which McCarthy just picks up.

We have not been great so far and have not put anything together but that all changes when THB picks up the ball from McCarthy and brings it forward before chipping a ball superbly into Aribo, on to Wee Man, a first time ball into Adam Armstrong on he left.  He tries to pull it back to Smallbone who gets tackled. It bounces out to Aribo who should pull the trigger but doesn’t and the danger passes.  It feels kind of significant though that a couple of quick passes and we got right through them and they didn’t have much composure in defence.  Gnonto decided that the best way to defend was to pretend he is injured and sit on the ground until he realised that the referee wasn’t going to stop the game.

Saints are now having a little bit of controlled possession.  Aribo is bought down on the edge of the box by Gnonto as he tries to release a pass, to give us free kit 25 yards out and just left of centre. Smallbone on the free kick and gets it up and over the wall and towards the top corner but Meslier sees it all the way and there’s not quite enough on it to cause a serious problem. The tide has turned though

The ball is with THB at the back and he pings it into Downes, who flicks it round the corner first time to Smallbone. As the Leeds defender Ampadu closes, Will pokes it through his legs and Adam Armstrong is away and clearly being played onside on the Leeds defence on the right. He takes it on and I have this feeling that he is never going to miss. Out comes Meslier looking tiny, and Arma rolls it past him into the far bottom corner of the net. Fucking get in.  I'm not even worried about VAR on that one as he’s miles onside.  Having told everyone near me to ignore the Leeds fans behind us and just enjoy the game, I was somewhat hypocritical in turning round and giving it both barrels with associated hand gestures to the now very quiet hospitality box  Fat bastard is not interested in engaging.

And the Leeds Hospitality Section Goes Quiet

Virtually straight from the kick-off, Brooks gets involved in a tangle with Firpo and hits the deck. There doesn’t look to be too much in it but after treatment, Brooks is holding his arm in an uncomfortable manner and there’s no way he’s gonna be able to carry on. He tries for a bit but the next time he’s involved he’s down at the deck again and his arm is clearly fucked. I’m expecting Adams to come on but it’s probably too early given his fitness levels and so on comes Sam Edozie.

Edozie and his fast feet is clearly going be an issue for Firpo and he goes past him for the first time and no surprise that Firpo brings him down. In comes Smallbone’s free kick from the right and it a training ground move with Armstrong darting to meet it and turning and hitting it.  Meslier gets down to make a good one handed save and the rebound is very inviting but Jack Stephens can’t get there before a Leeds boot clears it.  In order to stop the Leeds break Wee Man decides to drag down Gnonto, which I think he got away with but tapping the ball away sealed the yellow card.

Half-time, half-way there and the twats behind us have all gone in for the prawn sandwiches whilst we reflect on the first half job well done. Whilst the possession and general flow of play has been fairly even over the half, Saints have undoubtedly looked the most dangerous and of course, we are winning.  What have Daniel Farke and Leeds got?

We start the second half briefly the better but then Leeds wake up due to an unlikely source as Rodon strides forward from the back getting a lucky deflection as he bundles past Aribo and it looks for all the world like he’s about to score before THB steams into the tackle. It goes out to Summerville on the left and he curls his effort well wide.

Rodon tries again with a pass from deep. but this time his pass is intercepted by Downes and Aribo sends Edozie away on the left.  He gets to the edge of the penalty area and cuts in onto his right foot and goes for the top corner and high and wide and fuck… that would have made it more comfortable.  Never felt confident he would score and he really should have done better.

Wembley Mean Time is taking hold now and there is some sort of time vortex shit going on.  The first half flew, with a minute elapsing every thirty seconds.  What happened to that?.  I glanced at the scoreboard expecting it to say’75:00’ or something…’57:00’.  For fucks sake.

Ten minutes on and Che Adams is on for Ryan Fraser, who has been excellent and it looks like Edozie is dropping into Wee Man’s role on the left. You can tell Che is a little bit rusty as he comes back into midfield and takes a horrendous first touch and then has to bring down the Leeds player he has gifted the ball to. The free kick comes in and it’s shite, straight to McCarthy who catches with ease. Not long after that, Sam Edozie is showing the after effects of not playing much recently and suddenly having to play at Wembley, as he goes down with cramp to be replaced with Ryan Manning.

Leeds have brought on Dan James for the disappointing Summerville and looks very direct and dangerous.  We're nearing 90 minutes after what seems like an age and he picks up the ball on the left-hand side and plays at almost accidental 1-2 off a combination of Rutter and Bednarek before a smashing in an effort, which flies over McCarthy and it crashes down off the bar and out. Fuck me that came out of nowhere.

40,000 Southerners Collectively Shit Themselves

The Wembley slow-time vortex has finally reached 90 minutes and there’s a nasty clash of heads between KWP and James and whilst they are being patched up, the board goes up to show there are nine additional minutes. It’s two minutes before the game gets going again so I’m sure I wasn’t alone in looking at the scoreboard and knowing the game is going to end on 101 minutes and that seems years away.

James is certainly the most dangerous Leeds player, even with new medical head gear, as he gets on the end of a pull-back from fellow sub Jayden Anthony and his first time effort is well pushed away by McCarthy in what was his first save of the game. It’s getting to the stage of the game now where we are madly celebrating anything and shithouse substitute Connor Roberts playing a shit ball out of play under pressure from Aribo nearly rises the roof.

100, 101 and the whistle goes for free kick to Leeds in their own half. Adam Armstrong thinks it’s the final whistle so he’s got his shirt off and twirling it around his head but he puts it back on pretty quickly as Meslier pumps the ball forward one last time. THB gets up as he has done all day and thumps it away with his head and the whistle does go. Fucking hell we’ve done it.  The players to a man sprint to our end of the pitch and it’s mental.  Bodies everywhere, fantastic.

Russ Remembers Getting Released by Norwich in 2017

What a place Wembley is when you win. What a place Wembley is when they put Leeds fans directly behind you and you win. Unbelievable scenes. Just looking around there are people going through every available emotion. It’s brilliant.
My local hospitality box is very quiet, with the incumbents all back inside.  Get your moneys worth of prawn sandwiches lads.

Time for the trophy lift and Russell Martin doesn’t join in as Jack Stephens goes to collect and raise the trophy. It’s a brilliant moment. Russell is then fully involved with the boys get back to the pitch and the celebrations with the fans can properly begin. It’s amazing stuff.

No Caption Necessary

Sometimes you can go to a game and play well and not get the result you want and you can come away from it thinking that it was okay and we will get the result next week. There was no 'next week' on offer today and it was all about the result and all about winning.  It maybe wasn’t the best game ever and it maybe wasn’t the best fluid attacking performance but it doesn’t matter a shit. We won, end of. Next season doesn’t matter right now. Yes, we are in the Premier League and everybody will be projecting us to go down and the media outlets that all fucked off when we got relegated will probably want to write about us again. None of that matters. Today was about completing this season in the 49th game and achieving what everybody set out to achieve at the start of the season, which was to get Southampton back into the Premier League. We’ve done it and we deserve it.

If you just look at this game as if it was a normal game, then it wasn’t the best. It was an even first half with us of course taking the lead with a goal that came straight out of the playbook of things that are likely to happen against Farke’s Leeds. The Leeds midfield was nowhere with Smallbone picked up the ball, so Ampadu shot out of the defensive line like it was a game of whack-a-mole or something and when the ball was poked through, he laughably turned and appealed for offside when Rodon and Gray were ten yards behind him.  Adam Armstrong did the rest and he was never going to miss when confronted by Meslier. We got so close to making it comfortable at the end of the first half when Adam Armstrong again was free and his shot was well saved by Meslier and no one managed to force in the rebound.

The second half was just nervy and we didn’t do enough when going forward. Edozie should’ve buried the game but put a good chance wide and then it was all Leeds possession, but they didn’t really do anything until Dan James came on. The shot that hit the bar was a terrifying moment, or it would’ve been if it didn’t just come out of nowhere and other than that, Alex McCarthy just had one saved to make. It was relatively comfortable as holding on to a 1-0 lead ever is.

Everywhere you look you can find fantastic performances and stories. Alex McCarthy has gone from nowhere to being one of the heroes of the season in the space of five games, and there’s probably a very good chance that he’ll be offered a new contract now.  KWP has kept the much-hyped Summerville incredibly quiet for three games this season. He didn’t want to know and probably realised he was getting nothing today from the first whistle.  Ryan Fraser put aside any desire to be an attacking left winger to really dig in strongly at left back when we didn’t have the ball. Superb performance from the Wee Man.

Wee Man Being The Highest Off the Ground He's Ever Been

Our three centre backs did their job superbly. Jack Stephens looked a bit nervous in the first five minutes but after that he, Bednarek and THB were all absolutely magnificent and barely gave Rutter or Piroe a kick, whilst also helping out the full backs. As he confirmed in an interview straight after the game, THB is now at Southampton player, with a £20 million obligation to buy having been triggered by the promotion.  I mean, we didn’t need any more brilliant news today, but it never hurts, does it?

Oh Look, We've Got Some Business Done Early

It was unsurprising that Farke persisted with those four players but none of them are what you want when the chips are down and none of them are really going to help out the midfielders. Downes, Aribo and Smallbone all understood the assignment today once we went ahead, and that was to not get caught too far in front of the ball and all three of them had excellent games. We of course need to make the signing of Flynn Downes an absolute priority. Never fall in love with a loan player they say… too late for that.

Adam Armstrong, what can you say. Once again he had moments in this game where his touch wasn’t very good and he just gave a possession back too easily, but when it matters this season, he has been there to stick the ball in the net and for someone who has had games this season where he’s been so random with his finishing, today he was ice cold when given the chance and as I said earlier, he was never going to miss.  Elsewhere - has Che Adams played his last game for Saints? Has David Brooks played last game for Saints? What’s happening with Stuart Armstrong?  I’m sure all will become pretty clear, pretty quickly.

Russell Martin afterwards was very keen to give all the credit to the players and he talked about how he wasn’t particularly exciting appointment for everyone. He is too modest. He’s brought everyone together within the club and whilst there are some fans that will never be convinced, even after today, it’s been a fantastic ride so far.  We had moments under Ralph but the club appears to be in a better place than at any time since the Koeman days.  He made mention that we’d like to keep Alex McCarthy, Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams as well as Flynn Downes and Wee Man. We will see.  Lots of work to do on unloading players we don’t want so we can pursue all the ones we do.

A word for Leeds. 90 points is a ridiculous amount to get and not get promoted. Their fans showed up in huge numbers and made it a brilliant atmosphere throughout. I feel sorry for every single one of them who turned up to support their team in the away end. I do not feel sorry however for the hospitality dickheads behind me. I hope you enjoyed your prawn sandwiches and I hope it cost you a fortune and now you can fuck off.  I’ve seen it argued that the Leeds team didn’t really show up but that’s a bit disrespectful to us – nothing new there.  The truth is that we didn’t let them play and our mentality was better. The big players who Daniel Farke relies on with his absence of tactics, really didn’t do it because they weren't allowed to do it.  Gnonto and Summerville seemed to lose heart, maybe beaten by the previous two games. Piroe did nothing apart from shirk responsibility and Rutter was all flicks and tricks with zero substance. Dan James however, was brilliant when he came on and I’m glad he didn’t start.  My advice to those who do previews of big games is to maybe think about it all a little bit from a football perspective, rather than just picking the bigger club.

An additional bonus of winning of course is that by the time you’ve waited for the trophy lift and every player to vacate the playing area, all the Leeds fans had gone, so there’s none of that horrendous queuing up at the tube station with opposition fans giving you the big one (Chelsea 2019). By the time we hit the streets of Wembley there were virtually no Leeds fans about, apart from those stuck in traffic jams.  There was one guy trying to start a fight with random Saints fans out of his car window.  He wasn’t having a good time and I assume, not looking forward to the drive home when he eventually escaped gridlocked Brent.

Personally, we found our way to the Green Man on the hill for a couple of pints and then it pissed down and everyone piled in to the makeshift shelters to sing songs about Rickie Lambert, Gabbiadini, Russell Martin and E-I-E-I-E-I-O, up the football league we go. What a brilliant day.

Whether you’ve been to a few Saints games or if you’ve been to two thousand, today will be up there with your best ever days as a fan. 1976 probably tops it but nothing else in my opinion and it would take another Cup final win at Wembley to beat it.  A win at Wembley to actually win something tangible and get promoted to the Premier League is pretty much as good as it gets.

Up the Fucking Premier League Saints.

EFL Championship Playoff-Final Preview

Here We Go...

The Championship Play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Roll up, roll up for the richest game in football, worth an absolute ton of money for whoever wins it… and for the losers, the consolation prize of not being in the Premier League with all the greed and big club bias and games that you have no chance of winning.

It tells you something about the state of things, when promotion to the top division has a downside but that’s where we are but nonetheless, we all want to win today. Even if you’ve loved every second of being in the Championship, you want to win today because the novelty will soon wear off. This year we have been a very good team in the Championship, next year we probably won’t be quite as good because the wage bill will have to drop as the parachute payments decrease and the year after that, we might well be Norwich, which is something that nobody wants. The doom mongers are already talking about the negative impact that not getting promoted will have on one of Saints and Leeds, so we’ve got to make sure it’s them and not us that is looking at the balance sheet next season and wondering if we can hang onto their best players or sign any new ones.

So, let’s talk about winning.  Leeds and Saints accrued 90 and 87 points respectively, which in a vast majority of recent seasons would’ve been enough for automatic promotion.  Unfortunately, this year, Leicester dubiously managed to maintain a vast majority of their Premier League squad and signed new players on ridiculous money like Winks and Coady and won the league relatively comfortably… and no one saw Ipswich coming out of League 1 and into the top two. Leeds and Saints over the season have both been remarkably good, which is why it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anybody that Norwich and West Brom respectively were dispatched comfortably in the play-off semi-finals.  It should’ve come as no surprise because Leeds and Saints over the season were miles better than those two sides and a two-legged game will often bear that out. It’s just one game today though, the final game of a 49-game season and no one wants to see all their efforts end up in the bin and count for nothing.

Let's Have Some More of This

Saints of course beat Leeds twice this season and were the only team to do so. A 3-1 win at St Mary’s kick-started a 21 game unbeaten run in the league for us and got us in sight of automatic promotion before we somewhat folded. After the first few weeks, Leeds have been in the top three all season and around Christmas they were on a run for 13 straight wins and looked set to win the league, but they too fell away and ended up finishing third. Leeds still had an outside chance of automatic promotion when we visited Elland Road on the last day but put on a bit of a damp squib performance when faced with a surprisingly coherent Saints performance and we won that 2-1 and it was probably more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Winning those two games certainly does not mean that we just have to turn up today and we will win. The only real significance is in the tactics. In both games Daniel Farke sent out Leeds in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with his team frontloaded with their impressive attacking players. In both games Saints have had a lot of success breaking through midfield where Leeds were outnumbered with their four attacking players not being the best at tracking back. As we have discovered on a few occasions ourselves this season, if you don’t get the midfield screen right in front of the defence, even the best defenders will struggle and so will Junior Firpo, who is the opposite of one of the best defenders. I feel that Saints recent formation change to three at the back, has made us more solid and it completely suits every player that we have on the pitch and it may well give us the edge at Wembley. I honestly can’t see Farke leaving out one of his big four strikers so he will be relying on two of Gruev, Kamara and Archie Gray to subdue Downes, Aribo and Smallbone, who are all hitting excellent form at just the right time. Saints way to win this game is through the midfield and being incisive once we have played through the Leeds press.  Leads way of winning this game is to rely on the front four to do something brilliant between them, which they are more than capable of doing. In order to stop that, Saints of course have to defend in a compact fashion and with great concentration for however long it takes.  In both games against Leeds this season, it’s been concentration that has been the key to winning the game and I think I’m correct in saying that these are the only two games this season where we have had less possession than the opposition.

The Saints team I am expecting to play, starts off with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy who you could’ve got very long odds on appearing in a play-off final about two months ago when he was third choice goalkeeper are not even getting on the bench.  It’s still a bit of a mystery why Russell Martin promoted him from third choice to first with Gavin Bazunu‘s injury, but it has undoubtedly proven to be a very good decision with McCarthy rolling back the years to 2018 when he was Saints player of the year in the Gabbiadini at Swansea great escape season. Though he is not as good with his feet as Bazunu, he is undoubtedly a better shot stopper, so you win some you lose some.

The three central defenders well undoubtedly be Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens. Russell Martin knows that these are three of our best players and so it makes sense to have a formation where all three of them are playing in their natural positions.  On the one hand it is surprising that he didn’t try until the last game of the season but on the other hand, there had been no break between games to coach the system in the past couple of months, until just before the Leeds game.  Both Harwood-Bellis and Stephens will have to be on full concentration to stop the threat from the Leeds wide men. KWP will need help on the right from THB to subdue Summerville and Stephens and Manning on the left will have to do a lot better against Gnonto than they did at Elland Road.

....And Some More of This

As I’ve just mentioned, KWP will be at right wing back and has been the best player in that position in the league this season. This will undoubtedly be his last game for Saints if we don’t win and it might be his last game even if we do, depending on what offers are coming in the summer. That’s for another day though and on Sunday, we just need another massive performance from him both subduing Summerville and putting the aforementioned Firpo under pressure going forward.  Ryan Manning will probably be left wing back but it might be Ryan Fraser.  I’m sure we’ll see one start and the other finish the game.

The midfield picks itself because it will be our best player Flynn Downes, Will Smallbone and Joe Aribo. With Stuart Armstrong getting injured in the game against Cardiff just before the end of the season, these three had to step up and the formation change seems to have really helped them. I do have a minor concern about Smallbone and Aribo’s stamina to last 90 or maybe 120 minutes at Wembley, but they have been playing so well recently. In the event of one of them having to come off we have Shea Charles or Joe Rothwell and whilst they are capable players, they are nowhere near the level of those that they would be replacing.

The forwards will be Adam Armstrong and one other, and that one other will be either Che Adams or David Brooks.  If Adams is fit, I suspect he will start and Brooks will be used off the bench later in the game. There is also (whisper quietly) Ross Stewart who you would hope would be fit enough to do something off of the bench should he be needed and should Che not last 90 minutes. With Leeds strength being in attacking areas, Armstrong and Adams (or whoever) have to match that. In the league game recently those two caused absolute nightmares for Ampadu and Rodon by never being in a place where they could be easily marked. We also caused problems for Leeds down our right where KWP got forward to good affect and absolutely terrified Junior Firpo who, let’s face it, it’s half decent as an attacking full-back but he is a dreadful defender.

I’m expecting the Leeds lineup to be 4-2-3-1 and that Farke will have nothing new to bring to this game from a tactical perspective.  He’ll get slaughtered if he leaves out one of the forwards and loses, so I don’t see him doing it. – Meslier; Gray, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Gruev, Kamara; Summerville, Rutter, Gnonto, Piroe.

Can we win? Of course we can win if we manage the occasion and don’t get stage fright. We have proved that we can beat them if we go forward with intent when we can.  We can’t be comfortable and just knock the ball about with no purpose.  We had a pretty solid game plan in both of those previous Leeds games and in addition, Russell Martin will not want to get beat by Daniel Farke and that sub-plot exists because Farke drummed him out of Norwich as a player. Leeds have players that can hurt us so we have to do our jobs properly and concentration is going to be key. The wide-open Spaces of Wembley will in my opinion suit the team who are more compact defensively and that should be us, which may seem like a strange thing to say considering Leeds let in twenty less goals than us over the season, but really all that matters about defensive solidity is the last few weeks and we have been undeniably better.

... and Then This

The one thing I worry about is that we have one of those days where we can’t hit a barn door.  You only have to go back a few games to Cardiff away to find the last time that happened. If Che Adams (or whoever) and Adam Armstrong have decent games upfront, then we have a hell of a chance.  Leeds might have most of the ball as they have had in both of the league games but like in both of the league games, when we win the ball, we have to be incisive and we have to break quickly and the spaces will be there and this is where Smallbone and Aribo will be key. Can they find the passes through to the forwards?

Leeds have the players up front who can hurt us and if they do and score early, we have to be ready to play the long game and stay in touch.  We cannot of course, afford to get blown away as Norwich were in the semi-final at Elland Road.  But, first things first, we need to start well and show that we are not going to be daunted by the occasion. If we do that, then we have a chance of being back in the Premier League in August but if it doesn’t happen and it’s the Championship again, so be it.  It’s been a really good season whatever happens.

Up the Fucking Saints.

Hopefully Russell can Recreate This on Sunday

EFL Championship Match 46 - Leeds 1 Southampton 2

Make Sure the Ball Goes Out Junior, Mark Your Man Joe

Leeds United against Southampton in the eagerly awaited automatic promotion play-off. You can imagine that the opening line of the Sky Sports coverage was written nine months ago when the fixtures came out. However, Ipswich Town didn’t get the memo, so Leeds and Saints are taking part in a game with not much significance whatsoever.  It has absolutely zero significance for us because we are finishing fourth whether we win or lose 9-0 today. Leeds on the other hand, need to win today and then hope that Ipswich lose at home to relegated Huddersfield.  It is somewhat unlikely. Truth be told, the Ipswich versus Huddersfield game is a much bigger story than what is going on there and it will affect the mood inside Elland Road today. If by some miracle, Huddersfield take the lead then the ground is going to go mad and the Leeds players will suddenly start playing like lunatics. If Ipswich go ahead then Elland Road will be subdued and it becomes a real nothing game.

For the first time in weeks, Saints have no excuse for tiredness seeing as they have had a whole week to prepare. Russell Martin has hinted at this being treated as a preparation game for the playoffs to come, so we can expect the minutes of Flynn Downes to be carefully controlled. We are also expecting to see a few minutes from the Crock Ness Drogba, Mr Ross Stewart who in case you’d forgotten, was signed to score the goals to fire us to promotion. Maybe he can still do that. I still cannot help but feel that if he had been fit all season and turned out to be as good as we wanted him to be, it would’ve had a massive transformative effect on this team.

We turned to Ross Stewart when we couldn’t sign Joel Piroe, who of course had played for Russell Martin at Swansea but eventually signed for Leeds. It was never really adequately explained why we didn’t sign the big Dutchman but desire to comply with FFP and profit and sustainability rules was never far from the surface.  Though Stewart has had his injury issues of course, Piroe has been slightly underwhelming in terms of his goal output and recently has found himself out of the team with the likes of Georginio Rutter, Crycensio Summerville, Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford preferred to him.  Longer term we might be better off.

Stewart was apparently a cheaper option in terms of wages and it was a gamble because of his fitness record. When we signed Danny Ings a few years ago it was seen as a risk because of his injury record and after a stop-start first season, he certainly proved this worth before moving onto pastures greener. By greener I am of course referring to the colour of money. Maybe Ross Stewart can be the man up front for us next year, whatever division we are in.

Leeds looked like they were coasting to the title on the back of a 12 game-winning run that started in early January and just at the time when a large percentage of their fan base was celebrating an impending title win, they shit the bed and shit it repeatedly, culminating in a 4-0 defeat at QPR, which was their equivalent of our defeat to Cardiff.

A result of their implosion has been that people have been looking at and questioning the abilities of Daniel Farke. Leeds certainly have the strongest squad in the division outside of Leicester (how do you Leicester have such a strong squad – it’s a bit of a mystery?) and Farke has picked up quite a lot of stick as they have fallen away. He too has made noises this week about this being a preparation game and whilst the football world at large will be looking for some pointers about what might happen in a potential play-off final, I don’t think it’s really gonna tell us that much.

The first meeting of the season of course saw us steam roller Leeds in the first half and ultimately comfortably win 3-1 at St Mary’s, which was the first game of the long unbeaten run that we went on. We could do with today being the start of a four-match unbeaten run.

The eleven names on the teamsheet are interesting.  All three centre backs plus two full backs, which either points at us abandoning our usual back four or it points at KWP on the wing.  Flynn Downes starts as well so we’ve gone strong.  Time will tell if that’s the right move but at least we are trying something different.

Saints have in fact lined up with a back three which is an interesting change and initially we start playing fairly long because it looks like we haven’t quite sussed where the passing lanes are in this new formation. There seems to be loads of room in the Leeds midfield and Downes gallops through and it gets to the edge of the box before taking being taken out by Ampadu but the referee decides that despite coming in from the wrong side, making contact with a player and not getting anywhere near the ball, that it isn’t a freekick.

Leeds put us under a bit of pressure down our left with Gnonto cutting in past Stephens and Aribo goes to ground to try and win it but absolutely trashes him about a yard outside the penalty area. The free-kick is whipped in by Firpo but it’s at a comfortable height for McCarthy to just flick it over the bar
.

We go almost Route 1 as a clearance by McCarthy is flicked on by Aribo out to Adam Armstrong on the right.  A simple ball inside and KWP drives through the non-existent Leeds midfield and slides a ball into Smallbone but there is no conviction on his shot whatsoever and Meslier blocks easily and out for a corner.

It's Happened Again....

In it comes from Manning and cleared, headed back in by Downes, half cleared again and Downes flicks it left to Adams.  Che has clearly decided that his ‘strength’ stat is turned up to 99 today and holds off Kamara before putting it back across and there is Adam Armstrong about ten yards out, completely unmarked and with a swing of the left boot and not the cleanest of connections, he sends it goalwards and chocolate wrists Meslier can’t keep it out. You can hear the cheers all the way from Portman Road.

Oh, we seem to have poked the bear.  Leeds come out straight away with some hesitant defending by THB allowing Summerville to get a shot away which is well saved down low by McCarthy.  Macca rolls it out to Stephens who stolls in midfield and dawdles with it and gets tackled by Gruev.  Gnonto fires it in from the right, half a clearance by THB straight to Piroe and he drills it in from fifteen yards via a deflection off of Downes. Shit.  Any jubilation at the prospect of Leeds possibly being back in the automatic promotion picture dampens down a bit with news that Ipswich have taken the lead against Huddersfield.

It's time for some refereeing.  Having not awarded the one earlier on with Ampadu trashing through Downes, the ref seems to be making up for it by awarding soft ones as Summerville hits the deck under no challenge at all from Smallbone.  In comes the freekick and Ampadu’s header is tipped over by McCarthy but he was well offside anyway.

Having weathered the mini-storm, Saints get back on trying to exploit the Leeds non-midfield and win a corner, put in from the left by Smallbone, inadvertently flicked on by Byram and it looks for all the world like Adams is going to bundle in at the back post but with the boots swinging everywhere it’s a combination of Gruev and Meslier who manage to block and then the ball gets cleared.

A few minutes later, some controlled possession and Bednarek goes for the big diagonal to KWP on the right hand side, in a move rarely seen since the days of Vestergaard.  Now, I know that KWP is going to keep that in but Firpo can’t be bothered to make sure and when KWP does keep it in, Firpo overcommits and that’s the invitation KWP needs to piss past him and cut in before laying it along the six-yard line to where Smallbone has arrived to easily knock it into the net. Get in!! Leeds are all looking at each other.. Rodon has just stood there watching Smallbone run in front of him and Gruev hasn’t bothered tracking him. Neither are to blame as much as Firpo however, for one of the shittest, laziest, Under-11 pieces of defending you could ever wish to see.

Time for some more refereeing – good and bad.  Firstly, Rutter pulls out a bit premeditated dive in the box under no challenge at all from Stephens and he doesn’t buy it.  But then, Manning and Gnonto get into the mildest disagreement whilst smiling at eachother and both get a yellow card in the shadow of Daniel Farke standing there with his arms wide apart like he’s got some big issue with something.  The arms are out again a minute later as Gnonto spins away and goes down and Manning is now on a tightrope having picked up the ridiculous booking earlier.

Leeds have one more effort before half-time as Saints crowd out Summerville on the left of the box and it’s played back into the middle and eventually out to Gnonto on the right and he screws his shot across goal and wide.

Half time and this has been good so far.  Not much to worry about from Leeds as long as we stay compact in defence and midfield and opportunities for us if we can play through the press. With Manning having yellow card issues thanks to the ridiculous double booking, there is a sub at half-time and it’s Ryan Fraser coming on, so I assume the Wee Man is going to go to left-wing back. This is certainly a more progressive substitution than bringing on James Bree would’ve been. Wee Man is in the action straight away as Adam Armstrong bundles past Firpo on the right, with his cut back been cleared as far as Aribo who rolls it perfectly for Wee Man to hit first time and he curls it narrowly over the bar.

Saints are still playing some good stuff with Bednarek finding Adams who has come away from Rodon, who doesn't want to get drawn out of the defensive line and Adams has space to turn and slot the ball through and Adam Armstrong who has made a run-off the right, skipped around the goalkeeper and scored but the flag was up early so no excitement at all.

On the hour mark and it’s time to save some legs and Adams is off to be replaced by Sulemana, who will play up the middle.  Ten minutes later and Downes is off the be replaced with Rothwell.  It’ll be a challenge to keep the performance levels up having taken off the best midfielder and best attacker, losing as we do, the hold-up play and the defensive shield.

No problem as yet as Stephens drives forward and plays it right.  THB is on the charge and Rothwell finds him and cross of the day from the centre back, met in the middle by Sulemana, darting in front of the static Rodon, but it slides off his head and wide.

Our tactic for defending Summerville on the Leeds left is to basically stand on his right foot so he can’t shoot. He wants to bring it in on his right foot every single time and has no clue what to do otherwise.  Eventually he gets frustrated with Saints blocking that off and aimlessly lashes a ball across the box with his left foot which McCarthy pushes away easily enough.

And then the moment we didn’t think we’d ever see, certainly not this season, with Adam Armstrong being given a rest and being replaced by Ross Stewart who immediately gets involved and looks to have a good touch. Bree is also on for KWP as we look to give another one of our star men a rest.

Despite two attempted scything tackles in midfield, Saints break away down the right with Smallbone, who lays it into the path of Stewart who gets taken out from behind by Firpo who has of course already been booked for being a twat or being shit, but for some reason, he doesn’t get the second yellow that would have made his performance complete. I wonder if Daniel Farke is standing on the side with his arms wide apart imploring the referee to do the right thing. Anyway, with the free-kick to the right of centre, Smallbone tries to go low to the near post and it spins in towards the near post but hits the side netting.

The game is starting to get a bit feisty now with Smallbone being cynically tripped by Ampadu and when Smallbone reacts, Ampadu responds to the merest bump, by throwing himself to the ground like the big hard man that he is.

90 minutes are up in Leeds win a free kick on the edge of the box from another Summerville dive and the same player eventually steps up and smashes it into the wall and we get it clear. From the next leads attack, Saints snuff it out on the edge of the box and Piroe comes in with a very high and late challenge on Rothwell, he doesn’t take too kindly to it. Don’t like losing this lot do they?

The referees whistle blows and thus endeth a thoroughly deserved win.  A superb performance all round with every single player playing at a decent level.

Firpo Gets Harshly Booked for Being Shit

I am absolutely delighted that Russell Martin used the game to find out something different and the formation change suited us absolutely down to the ground.  A week of training not only helped us regarding a boost in energy but also in hatching this plan and formation.  The opening 10 minutes looked a little bit like we were struggling to find a passing options out of the defence but after we settled into it, it was generally excellent and once we beat the initial Leeds press there were so many chances for us because Leeds basically don’t have any defensive midfield structure at all and they have defenders who are always likely to cough something up. All of that was encapsulated in that little period in the first half where Adam Armstrong was completely unmarked to score from 15 yards, we coughed up possession to allow Leeds to equalise and then the chances kept coming with the shockingly bad Junior Firpo coming up with a bit of under 11s defending to allow KWP to set up Smallbone’s winner.

Everything that we tried today came off and even the half-time substitution, bringing on Ryan Fraser at left-wing back in place of Manning, worked out superbly with Fraser putting in a really good performance. We also managed to substitute virtually all of our key players with KWP, Adams, Adam Armstrong and vitally, Flynn Downes all getting minutes off in preparation for the playoffs. Not only did we withdraw those players, we still managed to win the game with in addition to Fraser, Sulemana, Rothwell and Ross Stewart, yes, Ross Stewart, all playing their part.  Even if we had allowed a Leeds equaliser in the last few minutes today with all the subs on, it would not of taken away from the fact that we played very well and it would’ve put a lot of confidence back into the team and into a vast majority of the fan base who aren’t beyond any persuasion.

The new formation seemed to suit every single one of our players and it gives another string to our bow. It is also worth remembering though that Russell Martin knows exactly how Daniel Farke sets up his teams from playing with him at Norwich, so it might be a one off thing because he knew it would be effective against a Farke team. That said, I thought the formation got all three central defenders onto the pitch, allowed the full-backs to concentrate on what are good at and it also seemed to help Smallbone and Aribo get through 90 minutes. It was generally a lot more compact in defence so even when Downes went off and was replaced by Rothwell, we still managed to maintain a good defensive structure in front of the defence. Up front, Che Adams and Adam Armstrong made sure that they weren’t static and easily marked by the central defenders and kept moving into the channels and Leeds defenders basically had no answer.

Ryan Manning was unlucky to get substituted at half-time but he had to be after picking up a ridiculous booking where he and Willy Gnonto had the mildest of disagreements and the referee decided to book both of them. I don’t think I’ve seen a more unnecessary double booking in my entire life of watching football. Flynn Downes looked much sharper than against Stoke and was probably cruising towards the man of the match award before he came off. Che Adams had an absolutely superb game up front. Proper centre forward play holding off Rodon with ease and keeping the attacks moving. Ross Stewart got ten minutes on the end and he look lively with some good movement and he looked pretty sharp and it’s certainly more encouraging to have him on the bench then our usual forward option.

The referee Matt Donohue was hilariously inconsistent throughout the game. As said, the double booking he handed out for absolutely nothing completely made a rod for his own back. If he was consistent then Manning should have been sent off for a second yellow.  He then went completely the other way. If you look at Junior Firpo‘s contribution to the second half where he got booked for dissent, then sarcastically clapped the referee, then did something similar at the linesman, then deliberately blocked KWP off the ball then brought down Ross Stewart from behind and still didn’t get a second yellow. Mind you, it actually helped us with him being on the pitch. Then there was Connor Roberts with his cheap shot on Sulemana, just barging into his back that went on punished, then there was the Ampadu and Smallbone incident. Joel Piroe got a booking for what should’ve been a red card for a very high challenge on Joe Rothwell.

Tedious Farker

I said at the start that Daniel Farke had come under a bit of scrutiny for Leeds collapse at the end of the season and he deserves it. All he seems to do is stand at the side of the pitch with his arms out wide, imploring the referee after a decision has already been made. The referee really isn’t gonna change his mind as a result of you doing that so stop doing it you dickhead. He looked like a guy who had no idea how to change the direction that the game was heading in. Yes, the score at Portman Road made this game a slightly deflating experience for Leeds but he certainly didn’t help. His whingeing seemed to translate to his players at the end.

The incident where Ampadu cynically fouled Smallbone and then dived when confronted about it by all eight stone of Will, was pretty embarrassing. Call yourself a captain and leader? Ha ha ha.. Leeds have some good players up front as everyone knows but they don't want to do any defending and today anyway they had absolutely nothing behind them in midfield and it was so easy for us to get at them. As we have seen ourselves on many occasions this season, if you don’t have a defensive structure in midfield then your defence is always going to struggle. Mind you, if one of your centre backs spends more time doing his hair than he does getting close to the opposition centre forward, then you are always going to struggle. That’s you Joe Rodon.  Every time Rodon does anything, take the corner or free kick quickly because he’ll be doing his hair.

I love the fact that today we were a little bit more pragmatic. We didn’t have 75% of the ball but we did a hell of a lot more with it than Leeds did and that is ultimately what it’s all about. After that,  I’ve come away with more confidence to Russell Martin knows there is more than one way to get the job done and that’s only gonna stand us in good stead in the three game season to come.

Other results meant that we are taking on Carlos Corberan and West Brom again and we should go into those games with absolutely no fear having beaten them twice this season already. It won’t be easy but then nothing worth achieving ever is and those previous games will probably count for very little.  If we meet Leeds again in the final, this game will mean very little as well.  Leeds will be better, of that I have no doubt.

A week to prepare, like we had today and now we have a trip to the Hawthorns to look forward to.

EFL Championship Match 9 - Southampton 3 Leeds 1

Sit Down Leeds

Two clubs get relegated from the Premier League at the tail end of last season.  Both struggle and lose lots of players due to the relegation. One starts the league season well and the other starts it poorly whilst all the chaos is going on. The transfer window closes and the one that started well, completely goes to shit - stops scoring and carries on conceding loads, whereas the one who struggled, suddenly starts winning and not conceding any goals. Guess which one we are and guess which one Leeds are? Saints got some criticism for not getting business done early enough in the summer, especially with some of the departures. Leeds seemed to get everything done early, even though it seemed to be by the route of just loaning players out in order to get the wage bill down as quickly as possible. Time will tell if that was a good plan or not.  They also had to wait for a ‘dickhead going on strike’ situation to play out, with Willy Gnonto refusing to train and play etc, but when no move happened for him, he’s now back, presumably with his tail between his legs.
What Leeds have definitely done is addressed the main problem area for sides that get relegated and that is at the top end of the pitch. They have kept Giorgino Rutter, who to be fair, at the end of last season they probably couldn’t have given away, bearing in mind they paid a ridiculous amount of money for him and he didn’t do anything last year.  They also signed Joel Piroe from Swansea, a player who would of course have been on our wish list, having scored 20 odd goals for Russell Martin’s Swansea side last year.  I suspect that we blew that one the moment we got into the compensation row with Swansea over the manager. Another reason that we couldn’t sign Piroe is because we didn’t sell Che Adams and the difference between those two players since the transfer window closed is stark. Leeds have ex-Norwich boss Daniel Farke as their manager and he apparently coached Russell Martin in his last year at Norwich.  Farke of course has the pedigree of having won the Championship before with the Canaries. The strength in this Leeds side is up front and you would normally look at the defence and think that was the area you could get at but having kept four clean sheets in a row, a run that Saints could only dream of, this is shaping up to be a very difficult game.
I think in every game that we have played this year, except maybe the Leicester game, Saints have gone into it as favourites, at least marginally but no one is really expecting anything from us here so the job for Russell Martin is to surprise everybody, to avoid racking up a run of five defeats in a row.  Having reflected on the past couple of games, I feel that the manager has tried to address some of the issues but has been let down by the players. Of course, he chose those players and the buck stops with the manager as usual. Against Leicester we tried the inverted full back nonsense which caused us no end of problems and then corrected that for the Ipswich game.  In the Ipswich game he got the midfield completely wrong and he corrected that for the Middlesbrough game.  Slim pickings but we have got better with Ipswich being better than Leicester and Middlesbrough being better than Ipswich. It’s a real marginal call however and there is it going to have to be a massive step up in the amount of improvement for us to get anything out of today’s game

There are certainly a few surprises in the starting line-up.  Kamaldeen Sulemana is in from nowhere and Stuart Armstrong and Charly Alcaraz also start with Shea Charles, Che Adams and Ryan Fraser dropping to the bench.  Is Stu playing on the right or is Charly up front?  Either way, we have most of our better players on the pitch.

Dink

Away we go and try and build out a defence with the ball being passed from THB to Alcatraz in the middle of the park and he works out well to KWP on the right hand side charging forward. On he goes, cuts inside, left foot reverse pass through the Leeds defence to where Adam Armstrong has run off the right wing and picks the ball up from a really tight angle and confronted with large headed keeper in the Leeds goal, goes for the dink and it beautifully flights over the flailing goalkeeper and drops in the far side of the goal. Fucking brilliant finish.  Two minutes? Who is this imposter in the captain’s armband?  1-0 – Sit down Leeds. Leeds immediately show little bit as you would expect having gone behind after two minutes and Rutter travels across the box before attempting a left-footed effort which Baz palms away easily enough.  We soon get the first piece of unnecessary defending as Sulemona stops a break down our right knocks it to Manning in the penalty area who instead of smashing up the park like a normal player would, tries to take a touch and treads on it and we end up with a spot of pinball in the penalty area before Byram lashes it well wide.

Will Spots That There Is a Player In There After All
Stuart Armstrong has has moments of showing class and picks up the ball on the left before sliding it into Sulemana down the left. He faces up Shackleton at right back and takes his time before playing a lovely pull-back ball on the ground to the arriving Smallbone on the edge of the box who rolls it neatly past Meslier and in off the post. Fucking brilliant goal. Amazingly, we are 2-0 up. Surely this can’t get any better? Yes it can as again we build up on the right hand side through Adam Armstrong and KWP and once again Alcaraz has come deep to pick the ball up and spreads out wide to Sulemana who makes his way across the top of the box and just when you think he’s about to shoot, he picks out Adam Armstrong on the right wing who makes an absolute mug out of Byram sitting him on his arse before from a tight angle again, slides it past the Leeds Hologram and the desperate effort of Struijk on the line to keep it out.  3-0. Madness.  Sam Byran took ‘Sit Down Leeds’ literally, knowing that he’s going to be appearing on a few memes.
Leeds have nothing – they almost look like they’re playing at half pace.  Sulemana wriggles away from two or three agricultural challenges before flashing the ball out to KWP.  He heads towards goal and is held up by Byram before turning out and crossing left footed to the back post where Alcaraz header is touched over.  Regardless, it’s a brilliant move and the positivity is remarkable bearing in mind where we’ve been the last four games.  The resulting corner from Stuart Armstrong is flicked on by namesake Adam and Smallbone goes flying in but can’t get his dome on it. Mind you, the big hand in the back that he got from Byram probably didn’t help.  Who needs VAR when you’re 3-0 up?
Standing ovation at half-time and off we go and unsurprisingly there are no changes for the start of the second half. We’ve been brilliant and Leeds have been shit and haven’t been able to live with us at all. Quite remarkable considering the pre-match predictions and pre-match mood from the football punditry world at large. The second half is obviously going to be different from the outset with Leeds having absolutely nothing to lose and Saints just needing to manage the game. The first 10 minutes are quite calm and then Ampadu tries a shot from the edge of the box which is deflected for a corner. And it comes from Summerville and it’s half cleared up in the air and the ball bounces for Struijk to bring it down with his back to goal, turn and knock it into the net. We had nine players in the penalty area plus the goalkeeper and still didn’t deal with it. The next 10 minutes are obviously going to be crucial, and Saints look okay even though we are giving the ball away, usually around the halfway line. A ball gets played through to Piroe who has a chance to show everyone what they were missing, but his touch is absolutely shit and it runs through to Baz. There is another opportunity for Leeds with James picking up the ball with the right, with our defence retreating and he has another chance to prove why Manchester United once paid ridiculous money for him and why Leeds did the same but it’s Dan James, - he’s shit and shanks it wide of the near post. Massed ranks of Leeds fans thought it was in, which is always amusing.  Sit down Leeds.
It’s time for some changes with Sulemana, having completed an hour being replaced with Ryan Fraser and Alcaraz is off for Che Adams. Within a few minutes, Smallbone is done and on comes Shea Charles. The general direction of traffic is still towards our goal though and Jaden Anthony gets a cross in to the box which is knocked down to Piroe, who shanks it straight at Baz. Substitutions then get a bit surreal with Stuart Armstrong, who has had an excellent game, being replaced with Joe Aribo and James Bree comes on, on the right wing to take the place of Adam Armstrong.  Leeds are done and know they are not getting back into this and the five minutes of injury time is negotiated very comfortably, with Leeds basically playing the ball around in front of us but not providing any threat to Baz in goal.  I spend the last few minutes wondering if Joe Aribo got a touch of the ball.
What a brilliant win that is. A very short summation of the game is that we blew them away in the first half and then managed the game pretty well in the second half. The dangerous part of the second half was straight after Leeds pulled one back but there was never really any heart in mouth moments that could’ve ended with us somehow throwing away what our brilliant first half had given us to hold onto.  We weren’t brilliant in the second half by any stretch of the imagination and probably didn’t look after the ball particularly well but when we did lose it, we didn’t get stretched out all over the place and broken upon. That was a huge reason why Leeds didn’t get back into it. The first half could not have been any better and we took the chances when they came to us. With Alcaraz and KWP combining to send Adam Armstrong away in the second minute, I didn’t see how he could possibly score from where he was but the dinked finish was something that I was pleasantly surprised to see was in his locker. Brilliant finish it has to be said.  Alcaraz starting the move was also key as Leeds probably weren’t expecting him to drop deep like that and for it to work straight away is a managers dream.
The second goal was down to some excellent buildup play by Sulemana, who showed previously unseen levels of intelligence in this game, playing at his trademark speed when he needed to but also taking his time and you won’t find a better example of this then on the second goal when it would’ve been really tempting for him just to smash the ball across but he took his time and picked out Will Smallbone’s run and Will did the rest.  Kamaldeen is the strangest player but seems to be playing with a lot of tactical discipline today.
Goal number three just showed that was really going to be our day as after another great pick out by Sulemana, Adam Armstrong again found himself through on the angle and I have a feeling this one might have been drifting slightly wider the far post but it flicked off a defender and nestled in the bottom corner again. Having negotiated the five minutes before half-time, the second half was much more measured and though it was frustrating at times but we never seemed to get into Leeds half before losing the ball, ultimately when we did turn the ball over we were a lot better at getting back into shape and Leeds goal came from a corner. Defensively I thought we were pretty good today, with Bednarek and Harwood-Bellis not giving the highly touted Rutter or Piroe a sniff. Considering the hype over the last few games, those two were really disappointing, thanks to the job on them done by our central defenders.

Joe Aribo Touch Map
Russell Martin have a great day today because he picked a team with some changes and made some tough decisions and it worked.  The substitutions were all made at the right time and each time, it was hard to argue with the switches being made. It’s interesting to note that whilst the substitutions were made at the right time, once they have been made, the manager doesn’t really have much control over how that player performs once they get on the pitch. I Would love to see Joe Aribo touch map because I don’t think he touched the ball in the 20 minutes he was on the pitch.  Che Adams did a decent impression of a trampoline up front and gave a pretty good indication of why he was left out for this game.  Every first touch going ten yards was not what was required.  The other subs who got significant minutes on the pitch did what they were brought on to do, Ryan Fraser got stuck in really well, as did Shea Charles. There were a few headlines with the team selection today, with Charly Alcaraz playing as a false nine / point of the diamond, which means that the weakness of his game, tracking back and defending, is not exposed. He was decent without setting the world alight but that position suits him as long as the wingers can provide a goal threat.  Having an extra person to pass to in midfield made the whole gameplan work better, giving more options to defenders when they wanted to play out. Stuart Armstrong was also massively influential today and just adds a touch of class to the proceedings and he’s always available and most of the time, he uses the ball very well. In my opinion, he has to stay in the side.  Will Smallbone had a dodgy opening 20 minutes, got booked and was perhaps slightly fortunate not to get a second booking but settled down once he scored.  He’d obviously been told to get stuck in more and today he was more of a presence than he has been of late.  He’s been reminding me a bit of the 20 year old JWP who got frequently bustled out of games and was ineffective but was a different player once he learned to get stuck in.
The captain got his first win today and It’s getting to the stage where even though he is frustrating at times, you can’t argue with Adam Armstrong’s goal return.  Both finishes were as good as they were surprising.  Last year he would have battered both efforts at the goalkeeper but he’s the man at the moment, and long may this new confident Armstrong continue in this vein.

Leeds didn’t offer much in truth and never built up the head of steam I expected from them from the start, nor when they got a goal back at the start of the second half. With the strikers not getting a sniff, I was expecting more from Dan James (average as always) and Summerville but they didn’t do much either. I don’t think those who were going on about us not signing Joël Piroe, will be doing it quite as vehemently as they were before seeing him play.  Kamara and Ampadu tried to drive Leeds forward from midfield but there just seemed to be a strange lack of urgency, really from once the second goal went in. Today changed the narrative somewhat – before the game, Leeds were marching towards the top if the league and Saints were struggling.  Now, both teams are on the same number of points.  Saints fans are realising their team isn’t so bad and Leeds fans will be maybe thinking that their team isn’t what they thought it was.

A special mention also go to the referee who was an absolute clown show, especially in the second half. Leeds started to put in the foot in a little bit more as you would expect and yet there was still a constant stream of free-kicks given against us and the final booking count was four for us and one for them. Basically, he only saw tactical fouls one way. Three of ours were for that and I have absolutely no problem with those being bookings but you’ve got to be consistent for both sides and he obviously had money on Ampadu not getting booked.
Nostalgically, it was a very similar game today to the opening game of the Championship season in 2011 when we played Leeds at home, raced into a 3-0 lead and ended up winning 3–1. Both in that game and this one, we kept the momentum going from the fast start that we had. Having scored three in the first half today, I hope we kick towards the Chapel End in the first half more often. It’s not something we chose to do because Leeds won the toss and switched the team round but I’m a great believer on if you stumble over something that works, keep doing it. It was nice to see Russell Martin’s interview after the game, in the context of having ended this run of four defeats in a row. The relief was noticeable. I do like the fact that after a win, he always points out the things that we need to do better which leaves you with the feeling that he does actually recognise what needs fixing and knows that we haven’t suddenly cracked it. This is of course the first thing you need to do before you can actually fix anything.  As I said at the start, I feel like he has been trying to address certain issues over the last couple of games but it hasn’t quite worked. Today it more or less all came together.
The games are coming thick and fast again this week with a Tuesday night trip to the Britannia Stadium in Stoke up next.  Having slightly unexpectedly won today, it would be fantastic to keep it going against a team who seem destined to be mid table this season. Bring it on and Up the fucking Saints.
